Od leta 2016 smo v skupini Labena poslovanje dodatno diverzificirali z nakupom in prevzemom laboratorija za raziskovalne, razvojne in analitične storitve BIA Separations CRO (ang. Contract Research Organisation), certificiranega za dobro proizvodno prakso GMP (ang. Good Manufacturing Practice), ki je akreditiran tudi s strani Javne Agencije za Zdravila in Medicinske Pripomočke (JAZMP) oz. Evropska agencija za zdravila EMA (ang. European Medicines Agency) in pa ameriške agencija za prehrano in zdravila FDA (ang. Food and Drug Administration). Ob prevzemu je CRO zaposloval skupaj 12 ljudi in je obsegal "analitični laboratorij", ki se je osredotočal na oblikovanje in razvoj protokolov za proizvodnjo zdravil ter na analitično testiranje aktivnih farmacevtskih sestavin in generičnih zdravil ter njihovo skladnost z Evropsko in Ameriško farmakopejo. Danes je v Labenini enoti BIA Separations CRO zaposlenih več kot 55 kolegov. V skupini Labena pa ima več kot 20 naših sodelavcev doktorat znanosti. Leta 2017 je podjetje investiralo v širitev enote BIA Separations CRO s postavitvijo laboratorijev za molekularno biologijo, leta 2019 pa tudi laboratorijev za proteinsko biokemijo, ki se danes osredotoča na razvoj procesov za proizvodnjo bioloških zdravil (kot so na primer monoklonska protitelesa) ter na splošno na pogodbene razvojno-raziskovalne projekte za farmacevtsko industrijo ter analizno preskušanje zdravil. Dejavnosti in storitve v CRO enoti smo podkrepili tudi z izgradnjo in krepitvijo kapacitet in storitev na področjih bioinformatike in mikrobiologije. Širitev podjetja Labena na področja raziskovalnih, razvojnih in analitičnih storitev v okviru enote BIA Separations CRO ter naložbe v rast nabora storitev sta spodbudila širitev podjetja Labena iz področij prodaje, aplikativne podpore in servisiranja opreme v raziskovalne in razvojne projekte s srednje velikimi in velikimi (bio)farmacevtskimi podjetji po vsem svetu. Danes nas je v skupini Labena že več kot 130 zaposlenih in se še naprej širimo na področjih raziskovalnih in razvojnih storitev z odprtjem laboratorijev, ki se specializirajo na področju okoljske DNK (ang. eDNA) ter z odprtjem kliničnega diagnostičnega laboratorija BIA Genetics v Zagrebu, na Hrvaškem. Z lansiranjem projekta Labena's Grant Challenge leta 2017 je Labena začela intenzivno vlagati v spodbujanje sodelovanja z institucijami, fakultetami, podjetji in zagonskimi podjetji na področjih znanosti o življenju, in sicer z dodeljevanjem raziskovalnih nepovratnih sredstev, pri čemer je svoje znanje, vire, prostore in opremo namenila raziskovalnim in razvojnim idejam z največjim potencialom za nadaljnjo trženje. Vendar se pri tem ne bomo ustavili: februarja 2023 je Labena lansirala Labena Ventures, pospeševalni program, ki se osredotoča na globalni razvoj prelomnih inovacij na področju biotehnologije, zdravstvene tehnologije in farmacije z izvorom v Srednji in Vzhodni Evropi.
